Bellevue is a small, rural community in Yamhill County, Oregon, in the United States. It's called "Bellevue" because it means "beautiful view" in French. No one knows for sure who picked the name.
This area was settled around 1860. Before "Bellevue," a post office nearby was known as "Muddy." The community is located on land that belonged to Hathaway Yocum. He moved to Oregon from Illinois in 1851. Bellevue had its own post office from 1869 until 1904.
Where is Bellevue Located?
Bellevue is found on Oregon Route 18. It is about eight miles south of McMinnville. It is also four miles north of Sheridan. The Bellevue-Hopewell Highway ends right here in Bellevue.
Schools in Bellevue
The first school for Bellevue School District 51 was built on land given by Thomas Morris in 1872. This first schoolhouse had just one room. It was used for many years until a new, bigger school was built in 1917. This new school had two rooms.
Over time, changes happened in the school district.
- In 1939, students in seventh and eighth grade started going to school in McMinnville.
- By 1942, all students from Bellevue were sent to schools in Sheridan.
- Then, in 1948, all students began attending schools in McMinnville.
- Finally, in 1950, Bellevue's school district officially joined with the McMinnville School District.
The original school building still stands today. However, it is no longer used as a school. It has been changed for other purposes.
