The Bellisime Glacier (72°19′S 99°53′W / 72.317°S 99.883°W / -72.317; -99.883) is a large river of ice found in Antarctica. It is about 4 nautical miles (7 km) long. This glacier flows south from Thurston Island, located to the east of another glacier called Myers Glacier.

This icy landmark was given its name by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names. They chose to honor Lynda B. Bellisime. She was a scientist from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Lynda Bellisime was part of a team that created important maps of Antarctica in the 1990s. These maps helped scientists understand the continent better. They used special satellite images to make very detailed maps of the land.

What is a Glacier?

A glacier is a huge, slow-moving mass of ice. It forms over many years from layers of snow that get packed down. Glaciers are often called "rivers of ice" because they slowly flow across the land.

The Bellisime Glacier is a good example of how these massive ice formations shape our planet. They are an important part of Earth's climate system.

Where is Bellisime Glacier?

Bellisime Glacier is located in Ellsworth Land, which is a part of Antarctica. Antarctica is the coldest continent on Earth. It is almost entirely covered by a thick ice sheet.

Thurston Island, where the glacier starts, is a large island off the coast of Ellsworth Land. It is surrounded by ice shelves and the frozen ocean.

How Glaciers Get Their Names

Many places in Antarctica, like Bellisime Glacier, are named after important scientists or explorers. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names is a group that decides these names. They want to honor people who have helped us learn more about this icy continent.

Lynda B. Bellisime was recognized for her work in mapping Antarctica. Her team used advanced technology to create detailed maps. These maps are still useful for scientists today.
