Bellou was a small village, or commune, located in the Calvados area of Normandy, a region in northwestern France. On January 1, 2016, Bellou joined with other nearby villages to form a new, larger commune called Livarot-Pays-d'Auge. This means Bellou is no longer a separate commune on its own.

Where is Bellou?

How Many People Lived in Bellou?

Bellou was a very small place. In 2019, before it merged with other villages, only about 134 people lived there. This shows it was a quiet, rural community.

Important Buildings in Bellou

Manoir de Bellou

One of the most important buildings in Bellou is the Manoir de Bellou. A "manoir" is like a large country house or manor. This one was built a long time ago, in 1720.

Next to the manoir, there is a dovecote from the 16th century. A dovecote is a building where pigeons or doves were kept. Both the manoir and its dovecote have been recognized as historical monuments by the French Ministry of Culture since 1923. This means they are protected because they are very old and important to French history.

Cider Press Building

Later, in 2004, the old cider press building that belonged to the Manoir de Bellou was also added to the list of historical monuments. This building still has its original machinery and a cellar. It shows how people used to make cider, a popular drink in Normandy, many years ago.
