Belmont is a small village located in Allegany County, New York, United States. It is part of the town of Amity. Belmont is special because it is the county seat of Allegany County. This means it's where the main government offices for the county are located.
In 2010, about 969 people lived here. The name "Belmont" means "beautiful hill," which gives you a hint about the area's scenery. The village is in the middle of Amity and is northeast of a larger city called Olean.
History of Belmont
The village of Belmont has an interesting past. It officially became a village in 1871. At first, it was called "Philipsville," named after an early settler, Philip Church. Before that, it was known as "Philipsburg."
Later, the village grew to include a community called Miltonville, which was on the other side of the Genesee River. When these two areas joined, the village was renamed "Belmont."
Belmont also became the county seat for Allegany County in 1859. It took over this important role from another village called Angelica.
Some important buildings in Belmont are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Belmont Grange No. 1243, the Belmont Literary and Historical Society Free Library, and the Belmont Hotel. These places are recognized for their historical importance.

The Genesee River flows right through the village, dividing it. Belmont is also a meeting point for several important roads, including NY Route 19, NY Route 244, and County Road 48. A major railway line, the Western New York and Pennsylvania Railroad, also runs through Belmont.
