Belmont is a suburb in Perth, the main city of Western Australia. It's about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) east of Perth's city center. Belmont sits on the southern bank of the Swan River. The local council that looks after Belmont is called the City of Belmont.

A Glimpse into Belmont's Past

How Belmont Got Its Name

Belmont has a history stretching back to 1831. That year, a large piece of land was given to Captain Francis Henry Byrne. People believe he named the area "Belmont" after his own estate in England.

Later, in 1882, a person named Shepherd Smith bought this land. He then divided it into smaller blocks between 1897 and 1898.

From "Belmont Park" to "Belmont"

The local government group for the area was first known as the Belmont Park Road Board. For many years, the suburb itself was called "Belmont Park." However, in 1968, its name was officially changed to just "Belmont."

What Belmont is Like Today

Belmont is a busy suburb with different types of areas. The western part is mostly for businesses and factories. The eastern and northern parts are more for homes. You can also find many motels and places to stay along Great Eastern Highway. This highway forms the north-western edge of the suburb.

Schools and Parks

Belmont has two public schools for students. These are Belmont Primary School and Belmont City College. Belmont City College used to be called Belmont Senior High School.

The suburb also has nice green spaces. You can visit Centenary Park or explore Signal Hill Bushland. There's also a 500-meter (1,640-foot) section along the southern bank of the Swan River that you can enjoy.

Belmont has a special friendship with a city in Japan called Adachi, Tokyo. This partnership started in October 1984. It's like having a "sister city" in another country!
