History
Belwood became an official town in 1978. Its name, "Belwood," actually means "beautiful woods." This name fits well with the town's natural setting.
Geography
Belwood is in the northeastern part of Cleveland County. Its northeast edge touches the border of Lincoln County.
North Carolina Highway 18 (Fallston Road) goes through the town. This highway connects Belwood to Shelby, which is about 14 miles (23 km) south. Shelby is the main city of Cleveland County. The highway also goes north about 25 miles (40 km) to Morganton.
The town covers a total area of about 12.3 square miles (31.9 square kilometers). Only a tiny part of this area, about 0.01 square miles (0.02 square kilometers), is water.
