Ben Carroll, born on July 12, 1975, is an Australian politician and a lawyer. As of July 28, 2026, he is the 50th Premier of Victoria and leads the Victorian Labor Party. He has also been a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Niddrie area since 2012.

Mr. Carroll first became a minister in 2017, working in areas like industry and jobs. He served in various important roles, including Deputy Premier of Victoria in 2023. He also worked as the Minister for Education and Minister for Medical Research.

He is part of committees that help make rules for the parliament and resolve disagreements. Mr. Carroll became Premier on July 28, 2026, after Jacinta Allan stepped down.

Ben Carroll's Early Life and School

Ben Carroll grew up in Airport West, Victoria. His dad was an electrician, and his mom worked at Glenroy West Primary School. He went to St Christopher's Primary School and then St Bernard's College in Essendon. When he was a teenager and young adult, he worked at Kmart. This is where he first learned about working with a union, which helps workers.

He studied law at La Trobe University and finished with great results in 2000. He joined the Labor Party during his university years. He became a solicitor, which is a type of lawyer, in 2010. After being elected to parliament in 2012, he also earned a Master's degree in Law.

Before becoming a politician, Mr. Carroll worked for an insurance company called AAMI. He also worked as a legal officer for the Victorian Government from 2009 to 2010.

Ben Carroll's Journey in Politics

Mr. Carroll started his political career by advising a former Victorian Premier, Steve Bracks.

In March 2012, people in the Niddrie area elected Mr. Carroll to the Victorian Parliament. He has been re-elected several times since then, in 2014, 2018, and 2022.

In 2014, he became a Parliamentary Secretary for Justice. In 2017, he became a Minister, looking after industry and jobs. After the 2018 and 2022 elections, he took on many important roles. These included helping with crime prevention, managing roads and public transport.

In September 2023, Mr. Carroll was chosen as the Deputy Leader of the Victorian Labor Party. This happened after Daniel Andrews stepped down and Jacinta Allan became Premier.

Working as Education Minister

When Mr. Carroll became Deputy Premier in October 2023, he also became the Minister for Education. In this role, he worked to address important issues for public schools. These included discussions about school funding, teacher pay, and how much work teachers have. There were some disagreements, and in March 2026, many teachers and school staff held a protest to ask for better pay and working conditions.

After many talks, the government offered a new plan worth $6 billion. This plan included a pay raise for teachers over four years. Mr. Carroll called it a very important offer and asked the union to stop their protests. However, in July 2026, the union members voted against this offer. Even though Mr. Carroll said that students should be in school, another protest took place on July 23, 2026. Some teachers also held smaller protests near his local office.

Becoming Premier of Victoria

In late July 2026, there were discussions about who would lead the Victorian Labor Party. Many members of parliament felt it was time for a change in leadership. Mr. Carroll decided to put his name forward to become the new leader. He believed it was very important for the party to be strong before the next election.

On July 28, 2026, Jacinta Allan resigned as Premier. She said it was the best decision for the Labor Party and for Victoria. Later that day, during a meeting, Mr. Carroll was chosen as the new leader. He received strong support from most of the party members in parliament. On the same day, Ben Carroll officially became the 50th Premier of Victoria.
