Benjamin G. Tayabas is a Filipino educator and administrator. He studied in the US. He is known for being the longest-serving university president of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM). He took over from Dr. Jose D. Villanueva in 1989. He also succeeded Dr. Virsely M. dela Cruz in 2000 and Atty. Jose M. Roy III in 2006. His time as PLM president was paused when he worked briefly for the Department of Education.

Besides his work at PLM, Dr. Tayabas was involved in many groups. He was the President of the Association of Local Colleges and Universities. He also served as the 1st Vice-President of the Philippine Association of Technological Association (PATE). He was a member of the board of trustees for two other institutes. These were the Institute for Studies on Diabetes Foundation and Laguna University. He also helped start the National Network of Quality Assurance Agencies (NNQAA). In 2005, he joined the executive committee for the Cinemanila International Film Festival.

International Recognition

Dr. Tayabas received special awards from Korea. In 2005, he got the Korean Prize in Cultural Education. He also received the 4th Korean Christian Cultural Academy of Arts Award (KCCAA). These awards were given in Seoul, Korea. He was the first Filipino and foreigner to receive them. He earned these honors for helping PLM work with Korean cultural groups for over 10 years. This partnership helped Korean students study in the Philippines. It also helped people from both countries understand each other better. The Jaycees Senate also named him one of the Ten Outstanding Filipinos (TOFIL).

Challenges During His Term

While Dr. Tayabas helped PLM grow, there were also challenges. During his time, the official student newspaper, Ang Pamantasan, was unavailable at times. This happened twice during his terms.
