Bens Run is a small place in Tyler County, West Virginia, United States. It is called an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.

Bens Run is located right by the Ohio River. You can find it where two roads meet: West Virginia Route 2 and County Route 5. It's about 4.3 miles (6.9 km) southwest of a place called Friendly. Bens Run used to have its own post office, but it closed on November 2, 2002.

Ancient Earthworks in Bens Run

Long ago, there were special structures made of earth near Bens Run. These were called "earthworks." They were built by people who lived here in prehistoric times, which means before written history. These earthworks were located between Bens Run and a nearby community called Long Reach.

What Were These Earthworks Like?

In 1808, a person named Lewis Summers described these earthworks. He called them an "ancient encampment." He said they covered about 10 acres (4.0 hectares) and had trenches around them. Later, some people thought they might have been much larger, possibly covering nearly 400 acres (160 hectares).

Where Are They Now?

The Archaeology Section of the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey officially noted these earthworks in 1965. However, by that time, there were no longer any visible signs of them. This means they had disappeared over time, perhaps due to farming or other changes to the land.
