Friendly is a small town in Tyler County, West Virginia, United States. In 2020, about 100 people lived there. It is located right next to the Ohio River.

History of Friendly

The town of Friendly was probably named after an early settler, Friend Cochrane Williamson. It officially became a town in 1898.

Friendly is famous for being the setting of the popular novel Shiloh. This book is about a boy and his dog.

In 1884, a special type of tomato, called an Heirloom tomato, was found near Friendly. It was discovered by James Lyde Williamson in a pile of flood debris after a big flood in 1884.

A special electric train system, called an interurban railway, started building lines in 1903. This railway was meant to connect Wheeling and Parkersburg. However, only a small part of it, about 5 miles (8 km), was built between Sistersville and Friendly. This short line operated until 1918. Friendly was one of the smallest towns in the U.S. to have its own interurban train service.

The historic Friendly City Building and Jail is a very important building in the town. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its history.

Geography of Friendly

Friendly is located at 39°30′54″N 81°3′40″W / 39.51500°N 81.06111°W / 39.51500; -81.06111. It sits along the Ohio River, directly across from Matamoras, Ohio.

The United States Census Bureau says that the town covers a total area of about 0.09 square miles (0.23 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
