A Look Back at Benton Hot Springs
The town of Benton, which was also called Hot Springs, has a long history. A post office opened here in 1886. The town was named after Senator Thomas Hart Benton. He was an important United States senator from Missouri.
Benton's Busy Past
From 1862 to 1889, Benton was a very busy place. It served as a supply center for nearby mines. Miners would come to Benton to get their tools and supplies. This was the town's "heyday," meaning its most successful period.
The Town Changes
After 1889, the mining activity slowed down. The town of Benton became less busy. Over time, the name "Benton" was moved to a different location. This new place became known as Benton Station.
The Warm Waters of Benton
The Benton Hot Springs are known for their naturally warm water. In 1915, a book described one of these springs. It said the water came out at a temperature of 135 degrees Fahrenheit (57 degrees Celsius). Imagine how warm that would feel!
Other Nearby Springs
Benton Hot Springs isn't the only place with warm water in the area. Other springs are located nearby. These include Paert's Hot Springs and Taylor Springs. They are just a little over 1 mile (1.6 km) northeast of Benton Hot Springs.
