Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Beornhæth was an important nobleman in the ancient kingdom of Northumbria. He lived a long time ago, during the rule of King Ecgfrith (671–685 AD). Beornhæth was the first person in his family to become well-known in history.

Who Was Beornhæth?

A historical book called Life of Saint Wilfrid mentions Beornhæth. It says he was a "sub-king" who joined King Ecgfrith. This was during a war against the Picts around 671 or 672 AD.

Historians believe Beornhæth might have ruled a part of northern Bernicia. This area is now known as Lothian in modern Scotland. There was an important Northumbrian fortress in this region, at a place called Dunbar.

Beornhæth's Family Background

In the 8th century, many noble families in Northumbria claimed to be related to famous kings. Some said they came from the legendary King Ida. Others claimed ties to the royal family of Deira. However, it is not known if Beornhæth's family was related to King Ida.

Beornhæth's Son: Berhtred

Beornhæth's son was named Berhtred. He was also sometimes called Berht. Berhtred was an important military leader.

Berhtred's Military Role

In 684 AD, King Ecgfrith sent a military force to Ireland. This group attacked the kingdom of Brega. Berhtred was in charge of this important expedition. We know Berhtred was Beornhæth's son from old Irish records. These records mention his death around 698 AD.

Beornhæth's Grandson: Berhtfrith

Historians think that Berhtfrith was Berhtred's son, making him Beornhæth's grandson. Berhtfrith was a very powerful nobleman. He was considered second in importance only to the king.

Berhtfrith's Influence in Northumbria

Berhtfrith played a major role in Northumbrian politics. In 705 AD, he helped defeat a person who wanted to be king, named Eadwulf. After this, Berhtfrith helped put Aldfrith's young son, Osred, on the throne as the new child-king. He managed this by helping different groups of supporters make peace with each other.
