Berclair is a small place in Leflore County, Mississippi, United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Berclair is about 3 miles (5 km) west of Itta Bena. It is also part of the larger Greenwood, Mississippi micropolitan area, which includes Greenwood and its nearby communities.
History of Berclair
Berclair is located right next to Blue Lake. A long time ago, in 1905, a big company called Schuh-Miller Lumber Company was located here. They worked with wood from trees.
Just five years later, in 1910, Berclair was a busy place. It had five general stores where people could buy many different things. There was also a sawmill, which cut logs into lumber. A cotton gin was also in Berclair, which helped separate cotton fibers from their seeds. This was very important for farming. Berclair was also on the Columbus and Greenville Railway, which helped transport goods and people.
Berclair even had its own post office. It was open from 1890 to 1894 and again from 1899 to 1920. This shows that it was an active community for many years.
Famous People from Berclair
One very famous person, the legendary blues guitar player B.B. King, was born close to Berclair in 1925. He lived in the area until he was four years old. After that, he moved to live with his grandmother.
