History of Berea
How Berea Started
Berea began in 1889 when the Burlington Railroad built tracks through the area. People from Ohio settled here and named their new home after Berea, Ohio. The railroad also built important facilities like a water tower for trains.
Early Life in Berea
By 1891, about 50 people lived in Berea. The community had a general store, a newspaper, and a post office. A few years later, a school and a community hall were added. These places helped the small town grow and connect.
Changes Over Time
Berea's population changed a lot over the years. It was an important stop for shipping goods by train. In 1921, a garage opened to fix cars and farm machines. The post office opened and closed a few times. In 1935, a company even ran a small oil refinery there.
In 1960, Berea had about 75 residents. The local school, District 39, closed in 2007 because it only had nine students. In 2009, the population was estimated to be around 50 people.
Where is Berea?
Berea is located about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Alliance. Alliance is the main town in Box Butte County. Berea is right next to the BNSF Railway tracks and near Nebraska Highway 2 and U.S. Route 385.

What Does Berea Do?
Berea does not have a main shopping area. However, it is important for farming. The Kelley Bean Company runs a large grain elevator next to the railroad tracks. This elevator can hold a lot of grain, about 633,000 US bushels (22,300 cubic meters). It also has space for nine railroad cars to load up.
In 2010, another company, West Plains Grain Inc., planned to build a new, fast grain-loading facility near Berea. This new facility would be able to handle 126 rail cars at once.
