Berend McKenzie's Life Story
Berend McKenzie is of African descent. He was adopted by a Caucasian family and grew up in Alberta, Canada. During his childhood, he faced challenges due to his identity. Despite this, his family was very supportive of him. These experiences later inspired his play, which explores themes of identity and acceptance. After a difficult time at school, McKenzie decided to leave.

Berend McKenzie began his film career in 2002. He had a small role in the movie, Life or Something Like It, alongside Angelina Jolie. He is most famous for playing Lance in the 2004 action superhero film, Catwoman. In this movie, he acted with stars like Alex Borstein and Halle Berry.
In 2006, McKenzie presented his first full-length play at the Edmonton Fringe Festival. It was called Get Off the Cross, Mary. This unique puppet show won the Xtra West Hero Award for Best Live Performance in 2008.
His second major play, ... (Would You Say the Name of This Play?), debuted in 2010. This play is based on Berend's own life experiences. It tells four stories about growing up and finding acceptance in Alberta, Canada. The play was nominated for a Jessie Award for Original Script. It was also performed at Halifax's Queer Acts Theatre Festival. A special version of the play, called Tassels, was created for elementary and middle school audiences.
