In 2010, about 94 people lived in Bergoo. The community is found where the Elk River meets Leatherwood Creek. When two rivers or streams join together, it's called a confluence. Bergoo used to be called Leatherwood, named after the creek.
There are different ideas about how Bergoo got its name. Some people think it was named after a local Native American person. Others believe it was named after a type of thick stew called Burgoo.
