This district was formed in 1938. Before that, there were two smaller areas. They were called Bensheim and Heppenheim. These two areas joined together to create Kreis Bergstraße.

Kreis Bergstraße is in the Odenwald mountains. The tallest point is a mountain called Melibokus. It stands 517 meters high.
A famous tourist road runs through this area. It is called the Bergstraße. This route starts in Darmstadt and goes to Wiesloch. The northern part of this road goes right through the district. This is how the district got its name.
