What is an Unincorporated Community?

An unincorporated community is a place where people live together, but it's not officially a "city" or "town." This means it doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or city council. Instead, it's usually managed by the county government. Berlin is one such community in Oklahoma.

A Look Back in Time: Berlin's History

Berlin has been around for a long time, with its own post office opening way back on September 2, 1896. This was a big deal because it helped people send and receive mail easily.

Early Days and Newspapers

In 1905, a census showed that about sixty people lived in Berlin. This was when Oklahoma was still a territory, not yet a state! Back then, Berlin even had two local newspapers: the Berlin Venture and the Berlin Harold. Newspapers were very important for sharing news and stories in the community. The post office eventually closed on May 5, 1967.

Ancient History: The Goodwin-Baker Site

Near Berlin, there's a very important place called the Goodwin-Baker Archaeological Site. This site tells us about people who lived here a long, long time ago, between the years A.D. 1000 and 1500. This period is known as the Plains Village period.

Archaeologists study places like Goodwin-Baker to learn about ancient cultures. The site is so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Roger Mills County, Oklahoma. This means it's protected because of its historical value.

A Rare Sight: The Berlin Firenado

On Tuesday, April 12, 2022, Berlin experienced a very unusual weather event. It was a 'Firenado', which is a rare type of whirlwind that forms when a fire creates its own strong winds. Imagine a small tornado made of fire! It's a fascinating and powerful natural phenomenon.
