Discovering Berlin's Heart: Mitte Borough
Mitte is known as the heart of Berlin. It's where a lot of important history happened. It's also a very busy and exciting place today.
What is Bezirk Mitte?
A "borough" is like a large neighborhood or a division of a city. Berlin is made up of several boroughs. Mitte is special because it's right in the middle!
It's a place where old history meets modern life. You can see buildings from hundreds of years ago next to new, tall structures.
Famous Landmarks You Can Find Here
Mitte is home to some of Berlin's most important sights. Many of these were once in East Berlin before Germany was reunited.
Some of the cool places you can visit include:
- The Pergamon Museum: A famous museum with amazing ancient art.
- The Brandenburg Gate: A huge, historic gate that is a symbol of Berlin.
- Charité: One of Europe's oldest and most famous hospitals.
- The Reichstag: This is where the German parliament meets.
How Mitte Became One Big Borough
In 2001, Berlin's boroughs were changed around. The old Mitte borough, which was in East Berlin, joined with two other boroughs. These were Wedding and Tiergarten.
Wedding used to be in the French part of Berlin. Tiergarten was in the British part. These parts were called "sectors" after World War II.
Now, all three of these areas are part of the new, bigger Mitte borough. This new borough covers about 39.47 square kilometers (about 15.24 square miles). As of 2003, about 320,700 people lived there.
The Districts of Mitte Today
The new Mitte borough is made up of several smaller districts. These include:
Who Leads Mitte?
Each borough in Berlin has its own leader, called a mayor. The current mayor of Bezirk Mitte is Christian Hanke. He is a member of the SPD. The mayor helps manage the borough and make decisions for the people living there.
