Bern is a city in Nemaha County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 166.
History
Bern had its start in the late 1880s by the building of the railroad through that territory. It was named by Swiss immigrants after Bern, the capital of Switzerland.
Geography
Bern is located at 39°57′44″N 95°58′19″W / 39.96222°N 95.97194°W (39.9622218, -95.9719422). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.29 square miles (0.75 km2), all of it land.

2010 census
As of the census of 2010, there were 166 people, 81 households, and 45 families residing in the city. The population density was 572.4 inhabitants per square mile (221.0/km2). There were 95 housing units at an average density of 327.6 per square mile (126.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 91.0% White, 0.6% African American, 3.0% Native American, 3.0% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.0% of the population.
There were 81 households, of which 21.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.1% were married couples living together, 4.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 2.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 44.4% were non-families. 40.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.05 and the average family size was 2.73.
The median age in the city was 43.5 years. 18.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 10.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.8% were from 25 to 44; 28.2% were from 45 to 64; and 19.9% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 51.8% male and 48.2% female.
Education
The community is served by Prairie Hills USD 113 public school district, formed in 2010 by the merger of Sabetha USD 441 and Axtel USD 488.
