Bernabé de Ayala (born 1625, died between 1671 and 1673) was a Spanish painter. He was known for his religious artworks. He lived and worked mostly in the city of Seville, Spain.
Life of Bernabé de Ayala
Bernabé de Ayala was born in Jerez de la Frontera, a city in Spain, around the beginning of the 17th century. He learned to paint from a famous artist named Francisco de Zurbarán. Bernabé de Ayala copied Zurbarán's style very well. He used similar colors and ways of painting clothes (draperies). Because of this, some of his paintings might even be mistaken for Zurbarán's work today!
Ayala was an important artist in Seville. In 1660, he helped start the Academy of Fine Arts in the city. He was a member of this academy until 1671. His name does not appear in the academy's records after 1673. This makes historians believe he passed away sometime between 1671 and 1673.
