Captain Bernard Philip Nevile (born August 1, 1888 – died February 11, 1916) was an English cricketer. He played in six important cricket matches, known as "first-class" games. He played for Worcestershire in 1913 and for the Free Foresters team in 1912. He also led the Lincolnshire team in smaller county championships.

Bernard Nevile: Cricketer and Soldier

Bernard Nevile was a talented sportsman who played cricket at a high level. He also served his country as a soldier. His life was cut short during World War I.

Early Life and Cricket Beginnings

Bernard Nevile was born at Wellingore Hall in Lincolnshire, England. He made his first-class cricket debut in June 1912. This was a big step in his cricket career. He played for the Free Foresters team against Cambridge University. In this game, he scored 4 runs and bowled one over.

Bernard went to Cambridge University himself. He didn't play for the main university cricket team. However, he was very good at golf. He earned a special award called a "blue" for his golf skills.

Playing for Worcestershire

In the next cricket season, 1913, Bernard played five times for Worcestershire. He showed his skills in two of these matches.

In a game against Kent in July, he took 3 wickets for 29 runs. A "wicket" is when a bowler gets a batter out. His first wicket was the opening batter, Punter Humphreys.

Two weeks later, he played against Surrey. This turned out to be his last first-class game. In this match, he had his best bowling performance. He took 4 wickets for 53 runs.

Service in World War I

When World War I began, Bernard Nevile joined the Army. He served in the Lincolnshire Regiment. Sadly, he was killed in action near Ypres, Belgium. He was only 27 years old at the time.

Bernard's brother, Charles, also played cricket for Lincolnshire. However, Charles did not play in any first-class matches.
