Bernard Sumner (born 4 January 1956) is an English musician. He helped start several famous bands. These include Joy Division, New Order, Electronic, and Bad Lieutenant.
Bernard Sumner was important in music styles like post-punk, synth-pop, and techno. He also influenced the music scene in Manchester, England, especially the "Madchester" movement of the late 1980s. This movement was linked to Factory Records and The Haçienda club. Bernard Sumner and drummer Stephen Morris are the only two members who have always been in New Order. They have played on all of the band's albums.
Bernard started his music journey playing guitar and keyboards for Joy Division. After the lead singer, Ian Curtis, passed away, the rest of Joy Division formed New Order. Bernard then became the lead singer. His music changed over time. In the 1980s and 1990s, his songs used more electronic keyboards, synthesizers, and computer programming. They became less focused on guitar.
In the late 1980s, he formed Electronic with Johnny Marr. This was a way for him to create music outside of New Order. Electronic continued even when New Order took a break in 1993. New Order started playing again from 1998 to 2006. After that, Bernard returned to a more traditional rock style with the band Bad Lieutenant. He still records and performs with New Order, which started up again in 2011.
