Bernard Sumner (born 4 January 1956) is an English musician. He is a founding member of several important bands. These include Joy Division, New Order, Electronic, and Bad Lieutenant.
Sumner helped shape different music styles. These include post-punk, synth-pop, and techno. He also had a big impact on the music scene in Manchester. This scene later became known as the Madchester movement in the late 1980s. It was centered around Factory Records and The Haçienda club.
He started his music journey playing guitar and keyboards for Joy Division. After their lead singer Ian Curtis passed away, the remaining members formed New Order. Sumner then became the lead singer. His music changed over time. In the 1980s and 1990s, he used more electronic keyboards and synthesizers. He also focused more on music programming instead of just guitars.
In the late 1980s, he formed Electronic with Johnny Marr. This was a way for him to explore different musical ideas outside of New Order. He later returned to a more traditional rock style with the band Bad Lieutenant. Today, he still records and performs with New Order, which reformed in 2011.
