Bernard Ward, the 1st Viscount Bangor

Bernard Ward (born August 18, 1719, died May 20, 1781) was an important Irish politician. He was also a "peer," which means he held a special noble title. He became the 1st Viscount Bangor, a high rank in the Irish nobility.

Early Life and Family Roots

Bernard Ward grew up in a well-known family in Ireland. His father was Michael Ward, who lived at Castle Ward in County Down. Michael Ward was a judge in a very important court called the Court of King's Bench. This court handled serious legal cases. Bernard's mother was Anne Catharina Hamilton. Her family came from Bangor.

Political Journey and Noble Titles

Bernard Ward began his political career in 1745. He joined the Irish House of Commons, which was like the parliament for Ireland at that time. He represented County Down, just like his father had done. He served there until 1770.

In 1770, Bernard Ward received a special honor. He was made a "Baron" in the Peerage of Ireland, becoming Baron Bangor. This meant he gained a noble title and a seat in the Irish House of Lords. He was honored again in 1781 when he was made a "Viscount," a higher noble rank, becoming Viscount Bangor.

Family Life and Legacy

In December 1747, Bernard Ward married Lady Ann Magill. Together, they had four sons and four daughters:

  • Nicholas Ward (1750–1827)
  • John Ward (who died young)
  • Hon. Edward Ward (1753–1812)
  • Hon. Robert Ward (1754–1831)
  • Hon. Anna Catharine Ward
  • Hon. Sophia Ward
  • Hon. Amelia Ward (who married Rev. Hugh Montgomery)
  • Hon. Harriet Ward

Bernard Ward passed away at his home, Castle Ward, when he was 61 years old. His oldest son, Nicholas, inherited his titles. Two of his other sons, Edward and Robert, also became politicians and served in the Parliament of Ireland.

Building Castle Ward

Bernard Ward was also known for rebuilding his family home, Castle Ward, in the early 1760s. He wanted the house to have a mix of styles. He liked the classic, grand look, but his wife preferred the older, more dramatic Gothic style. So, the house became a unique blend of both! He also bought more land around Castle Ward to make the estate bigger. He designed the grounds to be more open and even included a deer park.
