Monsignor Bernardino Piñera Carvallo (born September 22, 1915 – died June 21, 2020) was an important leader in the Roman Catholic Church in Chile. He served as a bishop for many years. He was also the uncle of Sebastián Piñera, who became the president of Chile.

Bernardino Piñera: A Life of Service

Bernardino Piñera Carvallo was born in Paris, France. He grew up to become a priest. He was ordained, which means he officially became a priest, on April 5, 1947.

His Early Church Work

After becoming a priest, Bernardino Piñera worked for a group called Catholic Action. This group helps people live out their Catholic faith. He was dedicated to his work.

Becoming a Bishop

In 1958, Pope Pius XII chose him to be an auxiliary bishop for Talca. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop of a region. Later, he became the Bishop of Temuco from 1960 to 1977.

Leading the Church in Chile

From 1983 to 1990, he served as the Archbishop of La Serena. This was a very important role. He also led the Episcopal Conference of Chile as its president from 1983 to 1988. This group helps guide the Catholic Church in Chile.

Participating in the Second Vatican Council

Bernardino Piñera Carvallo was part of the Second Vatican Council. This was a major meeting of Catholic leaders from 1962 to 1965. They discussed how the Church could better serve people in the modern world.

His Final Years

Monsignor Piñera passed away in Santiago, Chile, on June 21, 2020. He was 104 years old. At the time of his death, he was the oldest Catholic bishop in the world. He was also the last living bishop who had been chosen by Pope Pius XII. His death certificate stated that he died from pneumonia related to COVID-19.
