Bernardo Pardo was an important figure in the Philippine legal system. He was born on February 11, 1932, in Manila. He became a top judge in the country. He also led the group that manages elections.
Mr. Pardo was married to Zenaida C. De Dios. They had four children together.

Education and Early Career
Bernardo Pardo finished high school with honors in 1950. He studied law at the University of Santo Tomas. He graduated in 1955 and passed his bar exams in 1956. This meant he could become a lawyer. In 1978, he also studied at the Academy of American and International Law in the USA.
Career in Public Service
Mr. Pardo had a long career helping the public. He worked as a lawyer for several years.
Working for the Government
From 1971 to 1974, he was a Solicitor. A Solicitor is a lawyer who represents the government in legal cases. He also served as a judge in different courts. He was an Acting City Judge in Manila. Later, he became a judge for the Court of First Instance (CFI) in Caloocan. He then served as a Regional Trial Court (RTC) Judge in Manila.
Becoming a Justice
From 1993 to 1995, he was a Justice in the Court of Appeals (CA). This court reviews decisions made by lower courts.
Leading the Elections Commission
In 1995, Mr. Pardo was chosen to be the Chairman of the COMELEC. The COMELEC is the group in charge of making sure elections are fair and honest. He led the COMELEC until 1998.
Supreme Court Justice
On September 30, 1998, President Joseph Estrada appointed Bernardo Pardo to the Supreme Court of the Philippines. He became an Associate Justice. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the Philippines. He served there until he retired on February 11, 2002.
