About Bernhard Gregory's Life
Bernhard Gregory was born in Tallinn, Estonia, in 1879. His father was a lawyer. Bernhard went to school in Tallinn from 1885 to 1893. Later, he moved to Munich, Germany, to study chemistry and engineering. He continued his studies in Berlin. In 1902, Bernhard married Ida Hempel. They lived in Berlin and had two daughters, Iselin and Maud Dolly. Later, Bernhard and Ida lived separately, and Ida moved back to Leipzig with their daughters.

Bernhard Gregory was a very active chess player. He competed in many tournaments and matches throughout his life.
Early Chess Tournaments
In 1902, Bernhard played in a big tournament in Hannover, Germany. He continued to play in Berlin in 1903 and 1904. He also played in his hometown of Tallinn in 1904, where he shared first place! That same year, he competed in Coburg. In 1905, he played in Barmen and Berlin. In 1906, he took fifth place in a tournament in Nuremberg. He continued to show his skills in Berlin in 1907 and 1908, where he finished second in one event. In 1908, he played a match against the famous chess master Frank James Marshall.
Chess Achievements Before World War I
In 1909, Bernhard Gregory traveled to St Petersburg, Russia. He took third place in the All-Russian Amateur Tournament. This tournament was won by Alexander Alekhine, who later became a World Chess Champion! In 1910, Bernhard played in Hamburg and Berlin. A big moment came in 1912 when he won a major tournament in Breslau, which is now Wroclaw, Poland. In 1913 and 1914, he again played in St Petersburg in the All-Russian Masters’ Tournament.
Chess After World War I
After World War I, Bernhard Gregory continued to play chess. In 1919, he took third place in a tournament in Berlin. He also played in Berlin in 1920 and in Hamburg in 1921. His last recorded tournament was in Berlin in 1927.
Team Matches
Bernhard Gregory also represented Berlin in team matches. He played against teams from Vienna in 1911 and Prague in 1913. In 1920, he even played in a match against Holland using telegraphs to send moves!
