Bernard Hamilton (born June 12, 1928 – died December 30, 2008) was an American actor. He was best known for playing Captain Dobey in the TV show Starsky & Hutch from 1975 to 1979.
Who Was Bernie Hamilton?
Bernie Hamilton was born in East Los Angeles, California. His brother, Chico Hamilton, was a famous jazz drummer. Bernie went to Oakland Technical High School. This is where he first became interested in acting.
He started acting in films in 1950. For many years, he played small roles. He became more well-known after appearing in the movie One Potato, Two Potato (1964). This film was about a marriage between people of different races.
Bernie Hamilton is most remembered for his role as Captain Dobey. This character was a tough, no-nonsense police captain. He appeared in the popular 1970s TV series Starsky and Hutch.
Beyond Acting
Besides acting, Bernie Hamilton was also a businessman. In the late 1960s, he opened a nightclub and art gallery. It was called Citadel d’Haiti and was located on Sunset Boulevard.
Hamilton also had his own record label. It was called Chocolate Snowman. He produced rhythm and blues and gospel music recordings. He even released his own music. One of his albums was titled Captain Dobey Sings the Blues.
Later Life
Bernie Hamilton passed away on December 30, 2008. He was 80 years old. He died from a heart problem. Hamilton was a veteran of the US Army. He served during the Korean War. He was buried at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.
