Bernard "Bernie" Parmalee (born September 16, 1967) is an American football coach. He used to be a professional running back player. Currently, he is the running backs coach for the Carolina Panthers in the National Football League (NFL). Before joining the Panthers, he coached for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, and Miami Dolphins.

Parmalee played college football for the Ball State Cardinals. He was so good that he was added to their Hall of Fame in 2001. Even though he wasn't picked in the main draft, the Miami Dolphins signed him in 1992. He played nine seasons in the NFL, also playing for the New York Jets.

Playing Career

Bernie Parmalee played high school football at Lincoln High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. He then went on to play college football at Ball State University. He became the 3rd best rusher in the school's history. In 1987, he was named "MAC Freshman of the Year," a big award for a first-year player in his college conference.

Parmalee played as a running back for the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets from 1992 to 2000. He got his chance in the NFL after trying out for the Dolphins. Before that, he worked for UPS. He spent seven seasons with the Dolphins (1992–1998), playing in 104 games. During this time, he scored 15 touchdowns by running and 3 by catching passes. He ran for 1,959 yards and caught passes for 1,306 yards. In 1999, he moved to the Jets. He played two seasons there, appearing in 30 games. He scored 2 rushing touchdowns, ran for 220 yards, and caught passes for 179 yards.

Coaching Career

After his playing days, Bernie Parmalee became a football coach. He has coached for several teams at both the college and professional levels.

Miami Dolphins Coach

Parmalee started his coaching career with the Miami Dolphins. He coached their special teams and tight ends from 2002 to 2004.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish Coach

From 2005 to 2009, Parmalee coached for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish college team. He worked with both special teams and tight ends. Under his coaching, several tight ends became finalists for the John Mackey Award. This award goes to the best tight end in college football. Some of these players were Anthony Fasano and John Carlson.

Kansas City Chiefs Coach

On February 1, 2010, the Kansas City Chiefs announced that Parmalee would be their new Tight Ends coach.

Oakland Raiders Coach

Parmalee joined the Oakland Raiders as their running backs coach on January 25, 2015. In his first year there, Latavius Murray was chosen for the Pro Bowl. The Pro Bowl is like an all-star game for the best players in the NFL. Murray ran for over 1,000 yards, which was the first time a Raiders player had done that in five years. In Parmalee's second year, the Raiders had one of the best running attacks in the league. After the 2017 season, a new head coach took over, and Parmalee left the team.

Atlanta Falcons Coach

In 2018, Parmalee became the running backs coach for the Atlanta Falcons. He coached Ito Smith, who scored four rushing touchdowns in his first season. This was the most rushing touchdowns by a Falcons rookie since 2002. In 2019, he started as an assistant special teams coach and offensive assistant. Later that year, he returned to coaching the running backs. In October 2020, he changed roles again and became the special teams coordinator for the Falcons.

Jacksonville Jaguars Coach

On February 10, 2021, Parmalee was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He became their running backs coach under head coach Urban Meyer. He continued in this role when Doug Pederson became the new head coach in February 2022.
