Bernard Parmalee, born on September 16, 1967, is an American football coach. He used to be a running back player. He is currently the running backs coach for the Carolina Panthers in the National Football League (NFL). Before this, he coached for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2021 to 2023. He also worked as an assistant coach for the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs, and Miami Dolphins.

Parmalee played college football for the Ball State Cardinals. He was added to their Hall of Fame in 2001. The Miami Dolphins signed him in 1992, even though he wasn't picked in the draft. Parmalee played nine seasons in the NFL, also playing for the New York Jets.

Playing Career Highlights

Parmalee played high school football at Lincoln High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. He then played college football at Ball State University. At Ball State, he became the 3rd best rusher in the school's history. He was also named MAC Freshman of the Year in 1987.

Parmalee played as a running back for the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets from 1992 to 2000. He got his chance to play professionally after trying out for the Miami Dolphins. Before that, he worked for UPS.

Time with the Miami Dolphins

He played seven seasons with the Dolphins, from 1992 to 1998. During this time, he played in 104 games. He scored 15 touchdowns by running and 3 touchdowns by catching passes. He ran for 1,959 yards and caught passes for 1,306 yards.

Time with the New York Jets

In 1999, Parmalee joined the New York Jets. He played two seasons with them, appearing in 30 games. He scored 2 rushing touchdowns, ran for 220 yards, and caught passes for 179 yards.

Coaching for the Miami Dolphins

Parmalee coached for the Miami Dolphins from 2002 to 2004. He worked with both special teams and tight end players.

Coaching for Notre Dame

From 2005 to 2009, Parmalee coached for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish college team. He coached special teams and tight ends there. Under his coaching, Notre Dame's tight ends did very well. Some of them, like Anthony Fasano and John Carlson, became finalists for the John Mackey Award. This award goes to the best tight end in college football.

Coaching for the Kansas City Chiefs

On February 1, 2010, the Kansas City Chiefs announced that Parmalee would be their tight ends coach. He worked with the Chiefs for three seasons.

Coaching for the Oakland Raiders

Parmalee was hired by the Oakland Raiders as their new running backs coach on January 25, 2015. In his first year with the Raiders, Latavius Murray ran for 1066 yards. This was the first time a Raiders player had run for over 1000 yards in five years. Murray even made it to the Pro Bowl that year. In Parmalee's second season, the Raiders had the 6th best running offense in the league. After the 2017 season, Jon Gruden became the new head coach, and Parmalee, along with most of the coaching staff, left the team.

Coaching for the Atlanta Falcons

In 2018, Parmalee became the running backs coach for the Atlanta Falcons. He coached Ito Smith, who scored four rushing touchdowns in his first season. This was the most rushing touchdowns by a Falcons rookie since 2002. In 2019, he started as an offensive assistant and assistant special teams coach. However, on November 4, he returned to being the running backs coach. On October 12, 2020, Parmalee's role changed again. He became the special teams coordinator as part of a coaching staff change.

Coaching for the Jacksonville Jaguars

On February 10, 2021, Parmalee was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars as their running backs coach. He worked under head coach Urban Meyer. On February 17, 2022, he was kept on the coaching staff when Doug Pederson became the new head coach. Parmalee coached the Jaguars' running backs until 2023.

Coaching for the Carolina Panthers

Since 2024, Bernie Parmalee has been the running backs coach for the Carolina Panthers.
