Bernisse is a village in the western part of the Netherlands. It is located in the province of South Holland. Until 2015, Bernisse was its own municipality. Now, it is part of the larger municipality of Nissewaard.

The former municipality of Bernisse was home to about 12,384 people in 2014. It covered an area of 68.46 km2 (26.43 sq mi). A significant part of this area, 11.12 km2 (4.29 sq mi), was water.

Bernisse got its name from the Bernisse river. This river flows right through the area. It connects the Spui to the Brielse Meer. The river also separates two important estuary islands: Voorne and Putten.

How Bernisse Was Formed

The municipality of Bernisse was created on January 1, 1980. This happened when several smaller municipalities joined together. These included Abbenbroek, Oudenhoorn, and Zuidland. Parts of Geervliet (which included Simonshaven) and Heenvliet also became part of Bernisse.

Notable People from Bernisse

Many interesting people have connections to Bernisse. Here are a few:

  • Dirk van Hogendorp (1761–1822): Born in Heenvliet, he was a Dutch officer and writer.
  • Maarten den Bakker (born 1969): From Abbenbroek, he was a professional road bicycle racer. He even competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics.
  • Alexander van Oudenaarden (born 1970): Born in Zuidland, he is a Dutch biophysicist. He studies how living systems work.
  • Chanella Stougje (born 1996): From Zuidland, she is a professional racing cyclist from the Netherlands.
