Berriedale Water facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Berriedale Water is a small but interesting river in the far north of Scotland. It flows through a beautiful area called Caithness. This river is special because of its journey from wild moorlands to the sea. It also has a cool castle ruin nearby!

Exploring Berriedale Water

The Berriedale Water starts its journey high up in the Flow Country. This is a huge area of peatland, like a giant sponge! Three smaller streams, called Feith Gaineimh Mhor, Feith Chaorunn Mhor, and Feith Fhuaran, join together to form the river.

River's Journey

From its start, the river flows generally towards the east. It passes a place called Braemore. After Braemore, the river takes a turn. It curves to the south and flows through a valley. This valley gets narrower and narrower as it reaches the coast. The river finally meets the sea at a small village called Berriedale.

Meeting the Langwell Water

Just before Berriedale Water reaches the sea, another river joins it. This river is called the Langwell Water. The Langwell Water starts from streams located just south of where the Berriedale Water begins. Like the lower parts of Berriedale Water, the valley sides of Langwell Water become more wooded as they get closer to the coast.

Morven Hill and the A9 Road

A tall hill named Morven stands 706 meters (about 2,316 feet) high. This hill acts like a natural divider between the two rivers. It separates the land where the Berriedale Water flows from the land where the Langwell Water flows.

The main road in the area, the A9 road, crosses both rivers. It crosses them right where they meet, only a few hundred meters before they flow into the Moray Firth. The Moray Firth is a large inlet of the North Sea.

Berriedale Castle

If you visit the mouth of the Berriedale Water, you can see something historic. The remains of Berriedale Castle stand on the south side of the river's mouth. It's a cool reminder of the area's past!
