Berserker facts for kids
Berserkers were amazing and scary warriors from ancient Scandinavia, a region in Northern Europe. People in the past believed they fought in a wild, almost crazy way, like they were in a trance. This is where our English word "berserk" comes from, meaning to be out of control with anger or excitement.
Many old stories from Scandinavia say that berserkers were real. Most historians think these warriors worked themselves into a huge rage before a battle. This made them fearless and incredibly strong. Some people even thought they might have eaten special foods or herbs to help them get into this furious state.
The ancient story called the Ynglinga saga describes berserkers charging into battle without any armour. It says they were as mad and fierce as wolves. They were so strong they could kill an enemy with just one blow of their sword. People believed that neither fire nor iron could hurt them when they were in their berserk fury.
