What are the Berserker Range mountains made of?
The Berserker Range is mostly made of igneous rocks. These are rocks formed from cooled lava or magma. They are very old, dating back about 275 million years.
How did the mountains form?
Long ago, the Earth's crust in this area stretched and sank. This caused cracks, called faults, to form. Then, volcanoes became active. Much of the rocky peaks are made of a type of volcanic rock called rhyolite. When this rock breaks down, it forms a dark grey material. Some parts, like Mount Dick, are made of a different rock called breccia.
History of the Berserker Range
The Berserker Range has a rich history. It was once home to the Raki-warra clan. They are part of the local Darumbal indigenous people.
How did the Berserker Range get its name?
The mountains were named by Charles Archer. He was an early settler in Rockhampton. He named them after a "Baresark," a fierce Norse warrior. These warriors fought without armor in old Norwegian stories. The Archer family had lived in Norway for many years.
What happened in the Berserker Range over time?
In the 1800s, people did a small amount of gold mining here. Later, in 1900, land was rented out for grazing animals. The area became a timber reserve in 1940. This meant trees like ironbark and mahogany were cut down. Grazing stopped in 1974, and logging ended in 1985.
