Bertem is a small town, also called a municipality, located in Belgium. It is part of the Flemish Brabant province, which is a region in Belgium.
The municipality of Bertem includes the main town of Bertem, plus two smaller towns: Korbeek-Dijle and Leefdaal. As of January 1, 2006, about 9,215 people lived in Bertem. The total area of Bertem is nearly 30 square kilometers. This means that about 310 people live in each square kilometer.

Nature and Wildlife in Bertem
Bertem is well-known for its beautiful countryside. You can find peaceful rural landscapes here. Two special natural areas are the "Koeheide" and the "Bertem Forest" (called "Bertembos").
European Hamster Habitat
On the wide-open fields of Leefdaal, which is part of Bertem, you might even spot a rare animal. This is the European Hamster (Cricetus cricetus). This type of hamster is an endangered animal, meaning there are not many left in the world. Bertem is one of the places where they still live.
