The Berthelot River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Mégiscane River. This river is located in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, within the territory of Senneterre.
The Berthelot River flows through a large forest area. The main activities here are forestry, which means cutting down trees for wood. Tourism, like fishing or camping, is also popular. The river usually freezes over from mid-December until mid-April. A forest road helps people get to the western part of the river's starting point. The river's source is also close to the Canadian National Railway.
Where the Berthelot River Flows
The Berthelot River starts at Leigne Lake. This lake is about 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) long and 1.8 kilometres (1.1 mi) wide. It sits at an altitude of 397 metres (1,302 ft) above sea level. Many smaller streams feed into Leigne Lake. These include Riton Creek and water from Telesphore and Guerly lakes.
Leigne Lake is located in Leigne Township. It is about 11.5 kilometres (7.1 mi) northwest of the Canadian National Railway. It is also about 70.6 kilometres (43.9 mi) east of downtown Senneterre.
The Berthelot River flows for about 21.0 kilometres (13.0 mi). It first flows north through Macho Lake. Then it crosses Valmy Lake. After Valmy Lake, the river continues north. It gets wider in its last section before joining another river.
The Berthelot River ends by flowing into Berthelot Lake. This lake is part of the Mégiscane River. The Mégiscane River then flows generally westward. It eventually reaches Parent Lake (Abitibi).
The place where the Berthelot River meets the Mégiscane River is important. It is upstream from where the Achepabanca River joins. It is also downstream from where the Whitegoose River and Kekek River meet. This spot is about 93.5 kilometres (58.1 mi) northeast of Senneterre. It is also 38.2 kilometres (23.7 mi) north of the old Gagnon-Siding Railway Station.
