The Achepabanca River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Mégiscane River. This area is in the north-eastern part of Senneterre. It's part of the La Vallée-de-l'Or Regional County Municipality (RCM). This region is called Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

The river flows through forest land. It is north-east of the La Vérendrye Wildlife Reserve. It is also west of the Gouin Reservoir. The main activity here is forestry. Tourism is also important. The river usually freezes from early December to late April. Forest roads help people get to the Achepabanca River area.

Upper Part of the River

The first part of the river is about 11.8 kilometers long.

  • It flows west for 2.1 kilometers. It crosses a lake that is 391 meters high.
  • Then it goes north-west for 1.1 kilometers. This leads to the north-eastern part of Achepabanca Lake.
  • It flows for 7.6 kilometers through Achepabanca Lake. It goes south-west for 2.3 kilometers, then south for 5.3 kilometers. The lake is 7.9 kilometers long and 391 meters high.
  • It then flows south-east for 1.0 kilometer. It passes three sets of rapids before reaching a lake.

Lower Part of the River

The second part of the river is about 9.3 kilometers long.

  • It flows south for 1.8 kilometers, crossing an unnamed lake.
  • It continues south for 1.8 kilometers, making a curve to the west. This leads to a wider part of the river that forms a lake.
  • It flows south-east for 3.5 kilometers through a lake. This lake is 4.1 kilometers long and 390 meters high.
  • It then goes south for 1.8 kilometers through a small unnamed lake. This lake is 0.4 kilometers long and 389 meters high. Here, it meets the Achepabanca River North-East. This is the main river that flows into the Achepabanca River.
  • Finally, it flows south for 0.4 kilometers to where it joins the Mégiscane River.

Where the River Ends

The Achepabanca River flows into the north side of the Mégiscane River. The Mégiscane River usually flows west in a zigzag pattern. It is a tributary of Parent Lake. From there, the water flows into the Bell River. The Bell River then flows into Matagami Lake. Finally, Matagami Lake flows into the Nottaway River, which empties into James Bay.

The name "Achepabanca River" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec. This commission is in charge of naming places in Quebec.
