Bertram Anderson (born 1505, died March 14, 1571) was an important English businessman and politician. He lived in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and held several key positions. He served as Sheriff of Newcastle-upon-Tyne once and as Mayor of Newcastle-upon-Tyne three times. He was also elected as a MP for Newcastle-upon-Tyne five times. This meant he represented his town in the House of Commons, which is like today's Parliament.

Bertram Anderson was very active in the local government of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

  • He was chosen as the Sheriff of Newcastle-upon-Tyne from 1543 to 1544. A sheriff was a chief law enforcement officer in a county.
  • He served as the Mayor of Newcastle-upon-Tyne three times: from 1551 to 1552, 1557 to 1558, and 1563 to 1564. The mayor is the head of the city government.
  • He was also the Escheator of Northumberland from 1555 to 1556. This role involved managing property that went back to the Crown when someone died without heirs.

Representing Newcastle in Parliament

Anderson was elected to represent Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the Parliament five times.

Like his father, Bertram Anderson was also the Governor of the Merchant Adventurers of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. This was a powerful group of merchants who traded internationally. He held this position from 1551 to 1552 and again from 1557 to 1558. Bertram Anderson passed away on March 14, 1571.
