Bertrand Tavernier was born in Lyon, France. His father, René Tavernier, was a writer and publicist. A publicist helps promote things, like books or movies. Bertrand's father also led the French PEN club, a group for writers.
Early Life and Inspiration
Bertrand said his father's actions during World War II deeply influenced him. His father helped anti-Nazi writers and published a secret newspaper against the war. This taught Bertrand that words could be very powerful. He believed words were "as important and as lethal as bullets."
From a young age, Bertrand knew he wanted to make movies. When he was about 13 or 14, he decided to become a filmmaker. He admired directors like John Ford and Jean Renoir. These early influences helped shape his own unique style.
Starting His Film Journey
Bertrand Tavernier began his career working with other directors. One of the first was Jean-Pierre Melville. In 1974, he directed his first full-length film, The Clockmaker. This movie was a big success. It won the Prix Louis Delluc and a special award at the 24th Berlin International Film Festival.

Family Life
Bertrand Tavernier was married to screenwriter Claudine O'Hagan from 1965 to 1981. They had two children who also work in the film industry. Their son, Nils Tavernier, is a director and actor. Their daughter, Tiffany Tavernier, is a writer and assistant director.
Later Years
Bertrand Tavernier received a special Lifetime Achievement Award in Goa, India. This award honored his amazing work in movies over many years. He passed away on March 25, 2021, at the age of 79.
