Berwick's Beginnings
The First Settlers
The first European settler in the Berwick area was Ambrose Gibbens. He arrived around the year 1630. He set up a settlement and a trading post. A trading post was a place where people could trade goods, like furs or supplies. This first settlement was near Quampeagan Falls.
The "Great Works" Sawmills
The area around Berwick had many tall pine trees. These trees were very important for building. Because of this, the first sawmill in America was built here! It was called Gibbens' Sawmill and was located on the Great Works River.
Soon, more sawmills were built. There were as many as 18 sawmills! The Native Americans in the area called it "the place of great works" because of all the busy sawmills.
Growing into a Town
The community grew quickly. It soon had more than 200 people. By 1647, the settlements in this area became the first town in Maine, called Kittery.
Old Kittery included what we now know as Eliot, South Berwick, and Berwick. The area that is now Berwick was first known as the parish of Unity. It was also called Kittery Commons or Kittery, North Parish. Over time, people started calling this part of Kittery "Barwick," which later became "Berwick."
