The Beslan school siege was a terrible attack that began on 1 September 2004. It lasted for three days. During this time, more than 1,100 people were held against their will, including 777 children. The event ended with the deaths of 334 people, including 186 children, and 31 of the attackers. It is known as the deadliest school attack in history.
The crisis started when a group of armed individuals took over School Number One (SNO) in the town of Beslan. Beslan is located in North Ossetia, which is a region in Russia. This happened on 1 September 2004. The attackers were part of a group called Riyad-us Saliheen. They were sent by a Chechen leader named Shamil Basayev. The attackers demanded that Russia leave and recognize the independence of Chechnya. On the third day, Russian security forces entered the school building.
This event had a big impact on Russia's security and government. It led to changes that gave more power to the Kremlin and the President of Russia. There were also questions about how the Russian government handled the situation. People wondered about the information shared and how the negotiations with the attackers were managed.
Remembering the Victims
After the attack, people wanted to create memorials to remember those who died. There were discussions about building an Orthodox church as part of a monument in Beslan. Many people in Beslan also wanted to keep the ruins of the school as they were. They felt this would help remember the tragic event.
