Bessville is a small, unincorporated community in Bollinger County, Missouri, in the United States. Discovering Bessville
Bessville is found in the southern part of Crooked Creek Township. You can reach it by following Missouri Route OO. The community is about seven miles northwest of Marble Hill. It's also about 5.5 miles southeast of Marquand, which is in the nearby Madison County.
The Story of Bessville's Beginning
Bessville started as a stop along the Belmont branch of the Iron Mountain Railroad. This railroad was built in 1869. The community was planned out soon after the railroad was finished.
How Bessville Got Its Name
The community was named after two important people:
- Sam Bess: He opened the very first store in Bessville.
- Levi Bess: He was the first postmaster for the community. A postmaster is the person in charge of a local post office.
The first post office in this area was open from 1856 to 1864. After the railroad was built, a new post office operated from 1871 until 1955.
