Discover the History of Beverly Hills
Beverly Hills was started by a businessman named Sam Kellner. He made a lot of money in the tire business. In the 1960s, he bought a large piece of land in Citrus County, Florida. This land used to be for cattle.
How Beverly Hills Began
Sam Kellner decided to build a new community on this land. He built simple, one-story homes. He sold these homes to people who were retiring. Many of these retirees came from cities in the northern United States. Kellner named his new community Beverly Hills.
A Community for Retirees
Beverly Hills was one of the first planned communities in Central Florida designed for retirees. Because the land was in a rural area, the homes were affordable. This made it a great place for working-class retirees. The community grew very quickly. In 1962, there were only 20 homes. By 1965, there were about 400 homes. By 1972, about 4,500 people lived in 2,200 homes.
Changes in Ownership
Over the years, the ownership of Beverly Hills changed. In 1980, a company called Beverly Hills Development Corp. bought the community from Sam Kellner. Later, in 1989, it was sold again to Morrison Homes. Morrison Homes stopped selling houses in Beverly Hills in 1999.
Where is Beverly Hills Located?
Beverly Hills is in the north-central part of Citrus County. It is mostly surrounded by another community called Pine Ridge. A small part of it borders Black Diamond to the west.
