Bhima (meaning "terrible" or "formidable") is a famous hero from the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata. He is known as the second and strongest of the five Pandavas brothers. Bhima was incredibly powerful, said to have the strength of 10,000 elephants! He played a very important role in the great Kurukshetra War, helping the Pandavas defeat their cousins, the Kauravas.

Who is Bhima?
Bhima is one of the main characters in the Mahabharata, a long story about a war between two groups of cousins. He is the son of Kunti and the wind god Vayu, making him super strong. His human father was King Pandu.
His Family and Early Life
Bhima grew up with his four brothers: Yudhisthira, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva. Together, they were known as the Pandavas. From a young age, Bhima showed incredible strength. He was often playful but could also be very fierce when needed.
Bhima's Amazing Strength
Even as a child, Bhima's strength was legendary. He could easily lift huge rocks or pull down trees. This power made him a great warrior and protector of his family. He often used a heavy mace in battle, which only he could wield effectively.

The Lac Palace Escape
One time, the Kauravas tried to burn the Pandavas alive in a palace made of lac (a flammable material). Bhima used his strength to break through the walls and help his family escape safely through a secret tunnel.
Defeating Evil Demons
Bhima often protected people from dangerous creatures. He defeated a powerful demon named Bakasura, who was terrorizing a village. He also fought and defeated another giant demon named Hidimba, whose sister, Hidimbi, later became Bhima's wife. They had a strong son named Ghatotkacha.
The Dice Game and Vows
A major event in the Mahabharata was a rigged dice game. The Pandavas lost everything, including their kingdom and their wife, Draupadi. Draupadi was insulted by the Kauravas, and Bhima made a powerful vow to get revenge for her. This vow motivated him throughout the war.
Bhima in the Kurukshetra War
During the 18-day Kurukshetra War, Bhima was a fearless warrior. He fought many powerful opponents. He kept his vows and played a crucial role in defeating the Kaurava army. His strength and determination were key to the Pandavas' victory.
Bhima's Special Qualities
Besides his strength, Bhima was known for his loyalty, courage, and love for his family. He was also a skilled cook and sometimes used this talent to help his brothers when they were in hiding. He was always ready to protect those he cared about.

This relief shows Bhima rushing into battle, with bow and spear. He is preceded by a smaller standard-bearer, whose standard is emblazoned with another image of Bhima; appropriately, since Bhima was of course the general of his troops. The hero's curling hair is distinctive, and appears on both images of him.
