Bhimber (pronounced Bim-ber) is a town in Azad Kashmir, a region managed by Pakistan. It's the main town of the Bhimber District. This town and its district are located between the Jammu region (part of Indian-administered Kashmir) and Pakistan. It's about 47 kilometers (29 miles) southeast of Mirpur by road.

Bhimber's Story

Bhimber has a long and interesting history. For many years, from 1400 to 1856, it was the capital city of the Chibhal dynasty.

Old Records and Mughal Times

Around 1595, Bhimber was mentioned in a famous book called the Ain-i Akbari. It was listed as a "mahal" (a type of administrative area) under the Lahore region.

Bhimber was very important because it was on the main path that the Mughal Emperors used when they traveled to the beautiful Kashmir Valley. This is why Bhimber is also known as "Baab-e-Kashmir," which means "Door to Kashmir." Its location made it a perfect stopping point for the Mughals on their way to Srinagar. Even Emperor Jahangir wrote about Bhimber in his own book, Tuzk-e-Jahangiri.

You can also find Bhimber mentioned in the famous Atlas Maior, a map book published in 1665 by a Dutch mapmaker named Joan Blue.

More Recent History

In the 1800s, the Chibhal area came under the rule of Maharaja Gulab Singh. Around 1822, Bhimber, along with Poonch, was given as a "jagir" (a special land grant) to Raja Dhian Singh. He was a powerful leader and the brother of Gulab Singh.

Later, after some changes in power, the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir was formed. This state was under the control of the British Empire. The land granted to Dhian Singh was still respected, and his sons, Moti Singh and Jawahir Singh, became local rulers.

In 1852, the brothers Moti Singh and Jawahir Singh had a disagreement. As a result, Moti Singh received the Poonch district, and Jawahir Singh received Bhimber, Mirpur, and Kotli.

However, in 1859, Jawahir Singh was accused of plotting against Maharaja Ranbir Singh, who was Gulab Singh's successor. The British agreed with this view and sent Jawahir Singh away to live in Ambala. Ranbir Singh paid Jawahir Singh money every year until he died. Since Jawahir Singh had no children to inherit his land, Ranbir Singh took control of his territory.

This territory was then organized into the Bhimber district in 1860. Before 1911, the main office for the district moved to Mirpur, and the area became known as the Mirpur district. Bhimber remained a "tehsil" (a smaller administrative division) headquarters until 1947.
