Bhupinder Nath Kirpal, also known as B. N. Kirpal, was a very important judge in India. He was the 31st Chief Justice of India. This is the highest judicial position in the country. He served in this role from May 6, 2002, until he retired on November 7, 2002. He was born on November 8, 1937.

Early Life and Education
B. N. Kirpal's father, Amar Nath Kirpal, was also a lawyer. Young Bhupinder went to Modern School in New Delhi. He then studied at St. Stephen's College, which is part of Delhi University. He was a talented cricketer and played for both his school and college teams.
A Career in Law
B. N. Kirpal started his journey in law in 1962. He worked as an advocate, which is a type of lawyer. In November 1979, he became a Judge of the Delhi High Court. This is a major court in India's capital city.
Becoming Chief Justice
In December 1993, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court. This meant he was the top judge in that state's high court. Later, in September 1995, he became a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. This is the highest court in the country.
Finally, in May 2002, he reached the top. He became the Chief Justice of India. During his time on the Supreme Court, he wrote 195 judgments. He also participated in decisions made by 916 different groups of judges.
After Retirement
After retiring as the Chief Justice of India, he took on another important role. On February 21, 2003, he was appointed the first Chairman of the National Forest Commission. This commission works to protect and manage India's forests.
Family Life
Bhupinder Nath Kirpal was born in Lahore. He later moved to Delhi. He was married to Aruna Kirpal, who has passed away. They had three children together. His son, Saurabh Kirpal, is also a Senior Advocate. He works at the Delhi High Court. In November 2021, the Supreme Court of India approved his son to become a Judge of the Delhi High Court.
