Aziz Mushabber Ahmadi (born March 25, 1932 – died March 2, 2023) was a very important judge in India. He became the 26th Chief Justice of India. This is the highest judge position in the country. Before that, he was a judge in the Gujarat High Court. Later, he joined the Supreme Court in 1988. He served as Chief Justice from 1994 to 1997. After retiring, he also led the Aligarh Muslim University as its Chancellor for two terms.

A Judge's Journey

Aziz Mushabber Ahmadi got his law degree in 1954. He then started working as a lawyer. In 1964, he became a judge in Ahmedabad. This was a city court.

Later, in 1974, he became a secretary for legal matters in the state of Gujarat. This led him to become a judge in the Gujarat High Court in 1976. As a High Court judge, he worked on important boards. These boards helped prevent illegal activities. They also made sure essential goods were available. He also helped solve water disputes between states.

In December 1988, he became a judge in the Supreme Court of India. This is the highest court in India. Six years later, in October 1994, he was chosen as the Chief Justice of India. He was the third Muslim to hold this very important position. He retired in March 1997 after serving for two and a half years.

Global Recognition

Justice Ahmadi received many honors from around the world.

  • He became a member of the American Inns of Court in 1995. This is a group of legal professionals in the USA.
  • In 1996, he was honored by the Middle Temple in London. This is one of the oldest legal societies.
  • He received an honorary law degree from the University of Leicester in England in 1998. This means they recognized his great work.
  • He was also part of international committees. These committees looked into human rights issues. They also helped legal systems in other countries.

After Retirement

Leading a University

After leaving the Supreme Court, Justice Ahmadi became the Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. This means he was the head of the university. He was re-elected for another term in 2007.

He was often invited to speak at universities. He also spoke at different events around the world. In India, he used his position to talk about important political issues. He often spoke about the rights of minority groups.

Speaking for Minorities

Justice Ahmadi continued to speak up for Muslim rights in India. He was a Muslim himself. He stayed active in Indian politics. He was a strong supporter of minority rights. He even contributed to a book about helping minorities.

He believed that education was very important. He often said that many Muslim children in India struggled to go to school. He asked the government to help solve this problem. He felt that everyone should be able to contribute to the country's growth.

His Passing
