Manepalli Narayanarao Venkatachaliah, born on October 25, 1929, is a very important person in India's legal history. He served as the 25th Chief Justice of India, which is the highest judge in the country. He held this important position from 1993 to 1994. Even after retiring, he continued to work on important issues like human rights and fighting corruption.

Early Life and Education

Manepalli Venkatachaliah studied science at the University of Mysore. After that, he earned his law degree from the Bangalore University. These studies prepared him for a long and successful career in law.

Career as a Judge

Mr. Venkatachaliah started his journey in law in 1951. He worked as a lawyer for many years.

High Court Judge

On November 6, 1975, he became a permanent judge of the High Court of Karnataka. A High Court is a very important court in a state.

Supreme Court Judge

Later, on October 5, 1987, he was promoted to be a judge of the Supreme Court of India. The Supreme Court is the highest court in India. It makes final decisions on legal matters.

Chief Justice of India

Finally, on February 12, 1993, he became the 25th Chief Justice of India. This is the most powerful judicial position in the country. He retired from this role on October 24, 1994. During his time on the Supreme Court, he wrote 90 important judgments. He also participated in 482 court hearings.

Work After Retirement

Even after retiring from his role as Chief Justice, Mr. Venkatachaliah continued to work for the good of society.

Human Rights and Anti-Corruption

He focused on issues like fighting corruption and protecting human rights. He supported the launch of the Initiatives of Change Centre for Governance in 2003. This center helps improve how governments are run.

National Human Rights Commission

From 1996 to 1998, he served as the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission of India. This commission works to protect and promote human rights across India.

Reviewing the Constitution

In 2000, he led the National Commission to review the working of the Constitution. This group looked at how India's main rulebook, the Constitution, was working.

Current Role

He is currently the Chancellor of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning. This is a university located in Prasanthi Nilayam. He also serves on the Advisory Board of the Foundation for Restoration of National Values. This group works to bring back important national and cultural values in India.
