Sam Piroj Bharucha was born on May 6, 1937. He is a very important former judge from India. He held the highest judicial position in the country. This role is called the Chief Justice of India. He served in this position from November 2001 until he retired in May 2002.

A Career in Law
Sam Piroj Bharucha started his journey in law in 1960. He became an advocate at the Bombay High Court. An advocate is a lawyer who represents people in court.
Becoming a Judge
In 1977, he was appointed as an Additional Judge. This means he was a temporary judge. The next year, in 1978, his judgeship became permanent. He continued to serve at the Bombay High Court for many years.
Rising Through the Ranks
In 1991, he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. A Chief Justice is the main judge of a High Court. The next year, in 1992, he joined the Supreme Court of India. This is the highest court in India. Finally, in 2001, he became the Chief Justice of India.
Important Decisions
Justice Bharucha was involved in many important legal decisions. He was part of a special group of five judges. This group made a big decision in 2001. They ruled on the dismissal of J. Jayalalithaa. She was the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at the time.
A Unique Event
The judges decided that she could not continue as Chief Minister. This was a very rare event in India's history. It was the first and only time a Chief Minister was dismissed in this way.
His Work in the Supreme Court
During his time at the Supreme Court, Justice Bharucha worked very hard. He wrote 344 judgments. These are official decisions and explanations for legal cases. He also sat on 1,307 benches. A bench is a group of judges who hear a case together.
