Big Otter Creek facts for kids
Big Otter Creek is a waterway in Ontario, Canada. It is also sometimes called the Otter River or Big Creek. This creek flows into Lake Erie at a place called Port Burwell, Ontario.
The creek is about 42 kilometers (26 miles) long. The area of land that drains water into the creek is about 712 square kilometers (275 square miles). The creek starts north of the Horseshoe Moraine, which is a hilly area. It ends just west of the Long Point Conservation Area. The valley of the creek has beautiful bluffs, which are steep cliffs, as it goes through the moraine.
What is a Carolinian Forest?
Most of southern Ontario used to be covered by a special type of forest called a Carolinian forest. These forests are known for having large, slow-growing hardwood trees, like Oak and Beech trees. These trees can live for a very long time.
Sadly, not many of these old Carolinian forests are left today. However, between Delhi, Ontario and Lynedoch, Ontario, Big Otter Creek flows through a deep valley that is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) long. In this valley, there are still some areas of old Carolinian forest that cover about 259 hectares (1 square mile). These old forests are very important for nature and wildlife.
