History of Big Plain
Big Plain was first planned out in the spring of 1849. Three people, Thomas Chappel, Robert Thomas, and William D. Pringle, helped create it.
Early Name and Growth
The community was first called California. This name was chosen because of the exciting gold rush happening in the state of California at that time. William D. Pringle later helped the community grow even more.
By 1875, Big Plain was a busy place. It had one church, two stores that sold general goods, and a drug store. There were also two shops for blacksmiths and wagon makers, two doctors, and a shoe shop.
Changing the Name
A post office was set up in Big Plain on June 17, 1850. It was named the Big Plain Post Office. This name came from the large, flat grasslands in the area, which were known as the "Big Plains."
Because there was already another post office named California in Ohio, the community's name was changed. Sometime between 1875 and 1905, the town officially became Big Plain. This helped avoid any confusion with other places. The post office in Big Plain closed on December 14, 1905. Today, mail service for the area comes from the London branch.
Big Plain in the Early 1900s
By 1915, Big Plain still had a church. It also had a meeting place for the Knights of Pythias, which was a friendly club. The township hall, where local government meetings were held, was also in the community.
Population of Big Plain
The number of people living in Big Plain has changed over time.
- In 1875, about 125 people lived in the community.
- By 1915, the population had grown to 200 people.
